Biography

Dr. Michael Campagna is an Assistant Professor in the Justice Center at the University of Alaska Anchorage and a faculty affiliate of the Alaska Justice Information Center (AJiC). His work focuses on improving how juvenile and adult justice systems use research and evaluation to guide policy and practice. He has led state- and grant-funded studies on vocational programs, life skills training, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), reentry support, and risk and needs assessments. His goal is to help systems become more effective, fair, and grounded in evidence.

Before joining academia, Dr. Campagna worked as a master鈥檚-level behavioral specialist consultant, supporting youth and families involved in the justice and child welfare systems. He has lived and worked in several states, where he studied correctional practices, probation and parole supervision, and patterns of technical violations. His research helps agencies better understand system performance and improve how people are matched with services and supports.

He is trained in and has applied both quantitative and qualitative methods, including longitudinal research, mixed-methods design, and quasi-experimental evaluation strategies. Outside of work, he enjoys hiking and spending time in Alaska鈥檚 mountains and fresh air.

Teaching Responsibilities

Dr. Campagna teaches courses in juvenile justice, institutional corrections, criminological theory, and research methods. He emphasizes theoretical grounding, policy relevance, and the ability to connect academic ideas to real-world systems. He also serves as faculty advisor to Alpha Pi Sigma, 彩神vlll争霸鈥檚 criminal justice honor society.

Research Interests

Dr. Campagna鈥檚 research focuses on correctional policy, probation and parole outcomes, reentry, and the use of risk and needs assessments in institutional and community-based settings. He has published in journals such as Crime & Delinquency, Criminal Justice Policy Review, Journal of Offender Rehabilitation, and Criminal Justice and Behavior. His work includes applied evaluations of supervision intensity, recidivism, service delivery, and disparities in system access.
