Biography
Toby Widdicombe specializes in Tolkien studies, American and British literature, Shakespeare, textual studies, critical theory, film, and utopianism. He has published books on (among others) Tolkien, Edward Bellamy, Utopianism, Shakespeare, Shakespeare and film, Raymond Chandler, Max Nettlau, and Anglo-American travel writing. He has published articles in several journals, among them: Rethinking History, Extrapolation, Utopian Studies, Arena, ESQ, ATQ, English Language Notes, The Nathaniel Hawthorne Review, and Revista de Estudios Ut贸picos. His most recent book was an edition and translation of Max Nettlau鈥檚 Esbozo de historia de las utopias. His book-length study of Shakespeare and death is currently under consideration for publication, and he is working at the moment on a book focused on the application of critical theory to Agatha Christie鈥檚 oeuvre. It has the working title 鈥淛acques Derrida and Agatha Christie Went into a Bar . . . : Theory and the Grande Dame of Mystery.鈥 He is the former editor of the international journal Utopian Studies.
