Spring 2025 Meritorious Service Award: Stephen W. Haycox
by Green & Gold News |

Stephen W. Haycox was hired to found the Department of History at what was then called Anchorage Senior College. After 40 years, he retired, having won the Alaska Governor鈥檚 Award for Distinguished Service to the Humanities and the University of Alaska鈥檚 Bullock Prize. He was promoted to Distinguished Professor Emeritus of History, one of very few 彩神vlll争霸 professors to receive that honor.
Haycox also served as director of the Forty-Ninth State Fellows Program in 彩神vlll争霸鈥檚 University Honors College. During this time, he took on extra teaching duties and extensive summer travel with the Fellows. Half a generation of Alaska students still benefit from the education they received in the program he directed.
Among academic historians, Haycox is one of the leading writers of Alaska history today and has published many books, more than 30 professional articles, as well as the occasional opinion piece for the Anchorage Daily News. He is an active member and former president of both the Alaska Historical and Cook Inlet Historical Society, as well as former chair and member of the boards of the Alaska Humanities Forum, as well as many other civic organizations. His works help students, members of the Alaska public and readers in other states understand Alaska鈥檚 complex history and the challenges our state and its people face.
Since his retirement, Haycox has continued to offer distinguished service to the University of Alaska and to the Anchorage community, serving actively on the Meritorious Service Award Committee and participating in many university and community events.
